Starlink, T-Mobile Open Their Satellite Texting Test to All – Here’s How It Works

🚀 Free Satellite Messaging Until July – No T-Mobile Subscription Needed
📡 Say Goodbye to Dead Zones with Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell Technology
Why It Matters

We’ve all experienced signal blackouts in remote locations, leaving us unable to communicate. With T-Mobile and Starlink’s new satellite messaging service, those days might finally be over.

In a Super Bowl commercial, T-Mobile announced that its satellite texting beta program is now open to everyone for free until July, regardless of carrier.

“If you see the sky, you can connect. And not just in emergencies.”Mike Katz, T-Mobile President

📌 How to Use T-Mobile & Starlink’s Satellite Messaging

📲 Steps to Get Started
  • 🔹 Sign up for the satellite messaging beta (limited spots available).
  • 🔹 Ensure you have a smartphone made in the last four years (iPhones, Samsung Galaxy, and most modern devices are compatible).
  • 🔹 Once approved, your phone will automatically switch to satellite mode when no regular network is available.

The best part? You don’t need to point your phone at a satellite—Starlink’s 450+ direct-to-cell satellites will handle the connection just like a regular cell tower.

📡 What Can You Do with Satellite Messaging?

📩 Text-Only Service for Now
  • ✅ Supports SMS, RCS, and iMessage.
  • 🚫 No photos, videos, or voice calls (yet).

While the service currently supports text messages only, T-Mobile aims to enable multimedia messaging and basic internet-based services (like WhatsApp and GPS apps) by July.

“We’ll be working with app developers to optimize their apps for the satellite network.”Mike Katz, T-Mobile

💰 Is It Really Free?

Yes! The beta program is free until July. After that, pricing will be as follows:

  • ✔️ Free for T-Mobile’s Go5G Next Plan users.
  • 💲 $15/month for other T-Mobile customers.
  • 💲 $20/month for non-T-Mobile users.

If you're not a T-Mobile subscriber, you can still access Starlink messaging by installing an eSIM and using it as a secondary connection.

📡 Other Carriers Also Entering the Satellite Game

T-Mobile isn’t the only company making moves in satellite connectivity:

  • 📶 AT&T has partnered with AST SpaceMobile to launch satellite broadband.
  • 📡 Verizon teamed up with Skylo to offer text messaging via satellite.

As satellite connectivity expands, dead zones may soon become a thing of the past.

📱 Why Is Everyone Talking About Starlink on iPhones?

After Apple’s iOS 18.3 update, some media reports suggested iPhones now support Starlink satellite connections. However, this is misleading.

The update doesn’t change how iPhones connect to Starlink—it simply updates the status bar indicator to display "SAT" when connected to any satellite service, including T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon.

📌 Stay tuned for more updates as Starlink’s satellite messaging evolves!
